Has pop culture lost it's culture?

Once upon a time there was a movement. Where kids grew their hair and stopped showering out of rebellion. It wasn't the prettiest of times, but it was a time that was worth something. The music that inspired the masses had meaning. Soul. Depth.
But as I sit here and write this from my comfortable little apartment, I am disappointed to report that those days are over. The current music that the generations are surfing over the air waves to come in the form of bubble gum pop. This is the bling generation. The reality show nation. The generation of gimme gimme gimme. It is a generation of lost souls whose idea of rebellion comes in the form of $80 skinny jeans charged to their parents credit cards which are already maxed out.
What happened to the voices of greats like Bob Dylan? Janis Joplin? Kurt Cobain? What happened to zine scenes and squat houses? What happened to sticking it to the man?
Even Brett Michael's, a one time rebellious heavy metal front man, has sold out to the reality demons at VH1 in "Rock of Love". Can somebody please tell me what in the hell is going on?
I wonder if 20 years ago, someone would have told Mr. Michael's what he would be doing in 2008 what he would've said. But then again Ozzy did it, Gene Simmons did it, Flava Flave did it, now even wanna be's and almosts like Kim Cardashian, and Tila Tequilla (who are famous for what again?) are doing it.
Is there no end? Bands are being churned out like butter by P.diddy, or is it Puff Daddy? No wait, Sean Puffy Combs...no wait, whatever that guy's name is, and the 2 hit wonderful Pussy Cat Dolls. Oh God! They're multiplying. All over the world musicians who are fighting the fight are losing their battle to their poppy counterparts and we sell them out for a toe tapping ditty rather than a mind numbing guitar solo. Hooray for us! We've just reached an all time low!
I heard recently a report in Las Vegas about a news station finding chemicals like Prozac in the drinking water. Maybe it's effecting more of us than we know. And maybe bands like Nine Inch Nails are onto something when they create web based stories and drama's involving governmental control through our drinking water. Hmmm.....
Everyone is so damn hyped up on temporary happiness with this "stuff" that they forget about what's really important. Like the fact that our country is at WAR with another and has been for 5 years! Or that the children below us are getting less of an education then we did 10 years ago. I think this country needs to be woken up from their money coma's and start caring about what in the hell is happening outside of our doors again. From the 1960's-the 1990's there is a history of revolutions that happen mostly through music. Guys like Eddie Vedder who stood up to corporations like Ticket Master for the greater good. Or Zack De la Rocha who relentlessly reminded us that we were far from being free.
Maybe this country can't handle any more stress so we all turn a deaf ear to those who are trying to educate. Maybe it's time to join the ranks and stop being "safe" before it's too late. There are a lot of rotten things going on in this world while you sit idly by with your iPod on. People are dying and fighting for you, and you don't even care!
Arm yourselves with knowledge. Resist the hypnotic tactics of the powers that be, and do something! Inside each of us is the power to change the lives of others. Don't waste that opportunity by being numb!
